• Second-biggest market share growth across all passenger vehicle brands in SA
  • ‘Mainstream maverick’ philosophy underpins the design and development of every MG
  • Three new models in two new segments before the end of 2026
Johannesburg, 8 May 2026. Following the release of the April 2026 retail sales figures by naamsa, The Automotive Business Council, MG Motor South Africa is showing exceptional growth in the South African market. Born in Britain a century ago, the MG brand today is fuelled by the spirit of the original, re-energised by the technology of the future and forever motivated by the boundless opportunities that lie ahead. In Britain and various European markets, MG recorded cumulative sales of more than 300,000 units in 2025, making it the top-selling independent and Chinese-owned brand in Britain and Europe for the 11th consecutive year.

THE ONE TO WATCH

MG re-entered the South African market in January 2025 with a core line-up of models comprising the ZS crossover, HS SUV and all-electric Cyberster roadster, sold through a 20-strong dealer network. These models were joined by the MG3 hatchback in September 2025, followed closely by the ZS PRO compact SUV in the same month. The latter two models have made a very strong case for itself in the market in just more than six months, with MG’s dealer network expanding to 49 outlets across the country.

One year later, MG Motor is showing steady growth:

  • When comparing MG sales figures for the first four months of 2026 against the early days following its launch in 2025, MG has reported a market share growth of 1.6% in this period – the second biggest market share growth for the period amongst all brands available in South Africa – ending it in the top 15 amongst all passenger brands.
  • Since the start of 2026, MG has seen consistent monthly growth in retail volumes, softening slightly in April due to the reduced number of trading days and upwards pressure on consumer budgets.
  • MG is also recording growth in the MG Finance partnership with WesBank, which – underpinned by strong finance application approval rates, dominated by customers in the low-risk category – clearly demonstrates how the MG range is attracting a financially savvy and discerning customer base.
“We are very encouraged and energised by MG’s performance in the first quarter of 2026 and looking forward to even better results as we harness the momentum built over the first few months of 2026,” comments Jack Wang, Vice President in charge of Sales and Marketing for MG Motor South Africa.

“We are particularly excited by the MG customer profile which, backed up by the data from our vehicle finance partner, Wesbank, underpins our belief that there is a growing market for premium quality vehicles with European driving quality at mainstream price points.”

THE ‘MAINSTREAM MAVERICK’ PHILOSOPHY IN ACTION

Much of MG’s growth in 2026 is attributed to its latest models in the so-called B-segment of the market. While the MG3 hatchback is increasing in popularity, the charge is led by the MG ZS PRO. Priced from R397,600, the striking compact SUV has consistently been praised by the media and owners alike as one of the most compelling offerings in its segment due to the fine-tuned chassis that delivers comfort and control in equal measure, sporty performance thanks to its class-leading 125kW 1.5-litre turbocharged engine, and the refined driving experience from its continuously variable transmission (CVT).

“The MG ZS PRO perfectly encapsulates the MG brand’s approach to building vehicles that offer customers more than what they expect without compromising on the century-long spirit of driving enjoyment that underpins every MG vehicle,” adds Wang. “There is also no compromise on quality and reliability, as every MG model is supported by a comprehensive 5-year/150,000km warranty.”

In Britain and Europe, the ZS PRO recorded 32% growth in sales in 2025 (compared to 2024), with more than 132,000 units finding a home in 2025. This model’s compelling offering is destined to grow significantly in South Africa too.

FUTURE FOCUS

Off to a strong start, 2026 is a pivotal year for the brand in the local market. At a recent brand immersion event in Cape Town, during which MG Motor hosted several of South Africa’s most prominent automotive publications and content creators, the brand confirmed that it will expand its line-up of models before the end of the year. In fact, MG plans to enter two segments in which it doesn’t yet have a presence, with three distinct models.

The brand also plans on expanding its line-up of new energy vehicle offerings in the local market, following exceptional growth in Britain and Europe in 2025. MG’s range of Hybrid+ models available in Europe recorded 137,000 sales in 2025 (representing a 300% increase year-on-year), while an additional 46,000 units of its range of battery electric vehicles (BEV) were sold in the same period.

“At the very core of MG vehicles today is our philosophy of being maverick in approach, but mainstream in accessibility,” concludes Wang. “MG’s history is filled with inventive ‘firsts’ for cars, and that spirit lives on today. We continuously strive to innovate with the use of world-leading technology, brought into reach for everyone without compromising on value. This is the philosophy that underpins our goal of exceeding everyday experiences.”
